The Future of Business Verification Is Autonomous, Explainable, and Global. Here's Our Plan.

By Vasco Alexandre, Cofounder & CEO of Dotfile

Dotfile looks different today. New brand, new positioning. But this post is not about the logo. It is about where business verification is going and what we are building toward.

More than $200 billion is spent on compliance every year, and the people making the most critical decisions still do not have a clear, unified picture of the businesses they are verifying. Business got borderless. Trust infrastructure didn't keep up.

The automotive industry solved a similar framing problem by defining levels of driving autonomy, from Level 0 (human does everything) to Level 5 (full self-driving). That gave the entire industry a shared language and a shared destination. Compliance needs the same.

Today, most financial institutions sit between Level 0 and Level 2. Analysts manually pull registry data, reconcile documents, triage screening alerts, and write up their reasoning, case by case. The tools improved. The operating model barely changed.

We believe the industry is heading toward Level 5: full autonomous compliance, where systems gather evidence, assess risk, interpret regulatory logic, and execute defensible decisions under defined policies. Not to remove humans, but to move them from doing the work to governing it.

The path towards autonomous compliance

Just as the levels of driving autonomy gave the automotive world a roadmap, we think compliance needs the same clarity:

  • L0 – Manual operations. Humans do everything.
  • L1 – Basic automation. Rule-based alerts, simple triggers.
  • L2 – AI-assisted review. AI suggests, humans decide.
  • L3 – Partial autonomy. AI handles low-risk cases, humans review the rest.
  • L4 – Policy-bound self-decisioning. AI executes under policy constraints.
  • L5 – Full autonomous compliance. End-to-end autonomous operations.

Most firms today sit in the L0 to L2 range. They have some automation, some screening tools, maybe a workflow engine. But the decisions still rest entirely on people. The architecture was not built for anything more.

Moving up the levels is not about bolting AI onto a legacy stack. It requires a platform that can orchestrate global data, apply policy logic, produce explainable decisions, and leave a defensible audit trail at every step. That is what Dotfile is designed to do.

Autonomy: AI that clears the backlog, not the team

Dotfile Autonomy is how we bring L3 and L4 to life today. It is an intelligent engine that reviews documents, resolves screening hits, writes audit trails, and processes routine KYB cases with the rigor of a senior analyst. In seconds. At scale. Around the clock.

Every action the AI takes is explainable and auditable. The compliance officer sees exactly what was reviewed, what was flagged, what was resolved, and why. No black box.

In a world where every vendor claims "AI native," we think the winners will be the platforms that make their AI accountable, not just fast. Autonomy does not replace the compliance team. It removes the noise so the team can focus on the decisions that actually need them.

In the old model, humans do the work and systems record it. In the new model, systems do the work and humans govern it. That is the transition from L2 to L4, and it is happening now.

Compliance is shifting from defense to offense

The industry spent two decades building tools to help companies avoid fines, reduce fraud, and survive audits. Defensive language. Defensive technology. Defensive posture. The result: compliance teams buried in fragmented data, scattered registries, and screening results with no context. Ownership structures that take hours to untangle by hand. And at the end of it all, someone has to sign off on a decision they cannot fully explain.

We believe verification should work the other way around. When the picture is clear, explainable, and reusable across borders, compliance becomes the team that unlocks opportunity instead of slowing it down.

Autonomous compliance needs a global data foundation

None of this works without the right data underneath it. An AI agent is only as good as the evidence it can access, and in business verification that evidence is scattered across hundreds of national registries, each with its own formats, languages, availability windows, and quirks. A company registered in the Netherlands looks nothing like one registered in Brazil or Singapore. If your data layer cannot normalise all of that into a single, structured picture, autonomy stalls at L1.

That is why Dotfile is built as a global business verification platform first. We unify 400+ million business records across global registries, orchestrate risk signals from best-in-breed providers, and support 3,000+ document types. Not as a data dump, but as structured, contextualised evidence that our AI and our customers can actually reason over.

Every signal has context. Every decision leaves a defensible trail. Every verification can be explained to a regulator and reused across markets without starting from scratch. The global data layer is what makes autonomous compliance possible, and what makes it trustworthy.

Unravelling: see who you are really doing business with

One of the hardest problems in verification is understanding who actually controls a company. Ownership structures stretch across jurisdictions, run through layers of holding entities, and are often built to obscure rather than clarify.

Dotfile Unravelling maps complex corporate structures and beneficial ownership chains into a clear, visual graph. Teams get a complete picture of who sits behind any entity, how ownership flows, and where the risk concentrations are. Connected directly to our verification workflows, risk signals, and audit trails. When the ownership picture is complete, every downstream decision gets sharper.

Compliance is a growth engine. We are building the platform for it.

The business verification space is getting crowded. More funding, more noise, more vendors telling the same story. We think the story that wins is different. It is not about replacing human judgment. It is about amplifying it, and progressively automating the work that does not need it.

Autonomous verification that is transparent enough to trust. Ownership intelligence that reveals the full picture. Global coverage that travels with you. And a platform built for the compliance leaders who carry the weight of every decision the business makes.

The road from L0 to L5 is long. But the direction is clear, and we intend to lead the way.
