Congratulations to Bastion on its conditional OCC approval for a national trust bank charter

On September 18, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted Bastion conditional approval for a national trust bank charter. Once the conditions are met, Bastion's New York trust company will convert into Bastion Platforms National Trust Company, supervised at the federal level.

Congratulations to the whole Bastion team. We are proud to work alongside them, and we know how much work sits behind a sentence like that one.

What the approval covers

Bastion builds the technology, operations and compliance infrastructure behind enterprise stablecoin programs. It does not issue a stablecoin of its own: its clients launch products under their own brand and keep the economics.

The charter brings that stack under a single federally regulated entity. According to the OCC decision, the national trust bank would be authorized for:

  • fiduciary custody of stablecoins, and custodial wallets
  • conversion between fiat currency and USDC for custody clients
  • white-label stablecoin issuance
  • operational support for other regulated issuers

A different standard for stablecoins

Nassim Eddequiouaq, Bastion's CEO, put it this way in the announcement:

Stablecoins have moved from emerging technology into core financial infrastructure, and that requires a different standard of trust, governance and regulatory rigor.

We agree, and it is the part of this milestone that reaches beyond one company. As stablecoins move into the balance sheets and payment flows of large enterprises, the question institutions ask is no longer whether the technology works. It is whether the counterparty is supervised like the rest of their financial stack. A federal charter is one of the clearest answers a stablecoin infrastructure company can give.

Bastion also strengthened its bench alongside the announcement, with former senior executives from American Express, Morgan Stanley, Genesis, EY and Optum Financial joining its board and advisory group. It is a signal of where the company is heading: toward the governance you would expect from a bank.

Congratulations again to the whole Bastion team. The next milestones are yours to write, and we look forward to seeing them.
